The area now known as Foxfire was once referred to as “Piney Bottom”. Native Americans once hunted on the sandy ridge that runs through it. In 1780, there was a skirmish between the Tories
and the Whigs. Early settlers made their living from the pine forest by selling turpentine and construction timbers. It was also an agricultural area with crops such as cotton, tobacco, corn and rye as well as vineyards and peach orchards. The community is named for the mysterious luminescence that sometimes appears on decaying plants and woods. It was developed into a resort and residential community centered on golf in the late 1960™s by Rowland McKenzie.
