Robbins was first known as Hazel Neck and attracted potters and craftsman due to the clay soil. This collection of “mechanics” led to its being called Mechanics Hill. It had several other names including Elise and Hemp. In 1795 gunsmith J. Alexander Kennedy purchased the existing gun factory to build his famous Kennedy long rifle. He also operated a merchant mill and a sawmill. A textile mill was established and later purchased by a Russian immigrant named Karl Robbins who became a prominent figure in the textile industry. The town was eventually renamed to honor him. Robbins annual Farmer’s Day draws crowds in the tens of thousands.
