Although unincorporated until 1987, Taylortown was developed in the early 1900™s by Demus Taylor, grandson of one of the first African slaves brought to the New World and a descendent of the West African tribe known as Ebu. He purchased the land from the Tufts family to build homes for the work force for Pinehurst’s hotels and golf courses. The town was first called Old Settlement, but was renamed in his honor. Robert Taylor, the son of Demus operated a small caf© that was a gathering place for the settlement. He also helped found the school, which would become known as Academy Heights. A newer facility near the original school is also known as Academy Heights and is a year round school.
