Community Profiles
Southern Pines is the largest municipality in Moore County with just over 11,000 residents who enjoy its tree-lined streets, charming shops, equestrian farms and equally charming homes. First settled in 1820, with the railroad straight down the middle and the streets named for northern states, the new town was to entice weary travelers making their way from the North to Florida to take a break on their long train trip.
Pinehurst has enjoyed over a hundred years as a popular resort. Founded in 1895 by Bostonian James Tufts who started with 5,500 acres of pine barrens then transformed by Frederick Law Olmstead who designed the village and planted 226,000 trees to beautify the area. Today, the Pinehurst area is recognized as the No. 3 golf destination in the world.
Aberdeen successfully combines the new with the best of the past. The original settlers, Highland Scots, were attracted to this area in the 1700's because of the community's proximity to the four principal roads. It's modern business section along US Highway 1 is a thriving area. The town's original commercial center is now the historic district.
Whispering Pines began in 1959 with a lake and 475 acres. The village now owns six beautiful lakes and encompasses about 3,000 acres. It is home to three championship golf courses. Homeowners enjoy a relaxed lifestyle set amoung towering pines and scenic views.
Carthage, our county seat, boasts over fifty buildings and residences of historical significance still standing since the town's beginnings in 1796. County government courts and many professional offices and businesses still call the pleasant town of Cathage home.
Robbins, hometown of Presidential candidate John Edwards, is also proud of the pottery industry - a quaint and unique industry that has its roots in the clay soil of the region.
Pinebluff is a growing community of approximately 1,000 residents. It has a strong recreational program entered around Pinebluff Lake and has become a very pleasant residential area.
Taylortown, with a population of about 900, has a strong sense of community and pride. Founded in the early 1900's as a community that once served as home for employees of the Pinehurst Resort, Taylortown was later incorporated in 1987 by the efforts of the town's residents, ministers and businessmen.
Vass was a center of commerce and agriculture early in its history. Bricks, lumber, tar and even publishing all played a part in the beginnings of Vass. Today with a population around 800, Vass is known for its community involvement and small town hospitality.
Foxfire Village, begun in 1967, is a scenic golfing resort and residential community that sits on one of Moore County's highest elevations.
Cameron is the antique capital of the Sandhills. Cameron's historic homes hold a variety of antique shops and tearooms. Two Antique and Collectibles Fairs, one held on the first Saturday in May and the other the first Saturday in October, attract antique lovers searching for bargains.
